In these difficult and strange times there are always people that face things head on for the benefit
of others. Ollie Bowers, the son of the chairman of local football club Cinque Ports, formed the
Walk The Mind Facebook Group to promote walking as a way to prevent and assist in the
recovery of all aspects of mental health. It now has 27,000 members across 102 countries world
wide. It’s aim is to promote, support and fund-raise, through walking activities, for the Young
Minds Trust. Read on.......
“Over the last 27 days I have worked, helped raise our children and walked 1,000,000 steps to
raise money and more importantly awareness for the Young Minds Trust. I am totally and
utterly overwhelmed that a normal bloke, born in Hastings and raised in Folkestone, that has been
through a bit of shit in his life and has self destructed on occasion, has managed to create this
Walk The Mind community”.
“I literally couldn’t care less about my own
popularity through this group, but I know how
life works. People invest in people and so I have
put my story and my face out there to raise
awareness of this topic that I am so unbelievably
connected to and supportive of, Mental Health. I
am a normal bloke from very humble beginnings.
My family and very small circle of friends mean
the world and more to me but I now have 27,000 followers on this page
who are like my virtual family”.
“I sincerely hope I meet many of you on my continued Walk The Mind journey and I hope that
we as a group continue to improve and save lives on a daily basis”.
“At some point, somewhere on July 15th I’ll surpass 1,000,000 steps on day 27 of this challenge
of mine to raise money and more importantly awareness for Young Minds Trust. A personal
journey shared around the world with our brilliant and unbelievably supportive, kind and lovely
members of #WALKTHEMIND”.
“I hope I’ve done the Group proud by representing them. Together
we’ve raised over £8500 and still money is coming in!! Imagine what
that will do for Young Minds”.
“My last 1000 steps were streamed live on the Facebook group. Many of
the Group have been in touch to share the last steps with me but we felt
it simply would not be responsible to do that given the current situation
which was a shame!”
“Now that my task is wrapped up we can start planning the next event which will involve the whole
group!!”
“I know so many of you were with me in spirit and one day when the time is right, I really do hope
to meet some of you in person to thank you”.
