Joe Shaw (Sheffield United) 714 appearances
Joe made his debut in 1944/45 in the Wartime Football League North.
He was sixteen years and 285 days old. He played one other game in
that league before the second World War intervened. His playing career
resumed in the 1948/49 season. He represented the Football League but
never gained a full England cap. After he retired from playing he managed
York City (1967/68) and Chesterfield (1973/76). He died in Sheffield aged
79 in 2007. A statue in his memory was erected outside Bramall Lane.
David Blakey (Chesterfield) 658 appearances
David made his debut at 19 years of age during the 1947/48 season
and went on to play 658 games for them which is a club record. He was
reported to have been a transfer target for Liverpool under the newly
appointed manager, Bill Shankly in 1960, but because of the iniquitous
maximum wage rule is said to have rejected the move as he would not
have been appreciably better off financially. After retiring from playing he
worked as a scout for Burnley, Doncaster Rovers and Leeds United.
Micky Cook (Colchester United) 701 appearances
Micky was originally with Leyton Orient as a youth but was encouraged
to join Colchester as a professional at 19 years of age by former manager
Dick Graham. He made his debut in 1969/70 to 1984/85 and played 701
times for the club scoring 24 goals. He was a member of the victorious
Colchester team that defeated the mighty Leeds United in 1971 in that
memorable FA Cup match. After retiring from playing he became a very
competent coach and also managed the club in 1999. He also worked
for Colne Community School and college in Brightlingsea for twelve years coaching talented
teenagers until his retirement in 2016.
