The chairman of Buxted FC, Richard Turner, commented, “I am pretty disgusted that someone
could do this to a bit of equipment that could save someone’s life. We all know how important
defibrillators are, which was proved yesterday to a professional
player. The club hasn’t got one until we get a replacement, so lives
are at risk.”
“The whole world saw what happened to Christian Eriksen on
Saturday so why would anyone think that’s OK? Everyone at the
club is a volunteer, we work hard for what we’ve got, but now we’ll
have to raise funds to replace it. It’s just heartbreaking.”
Mr Turner said that, before the incident, Buxted FC had been
celebrating winning the Mid-Sussex League Division One trophy.
The Euros Get Underway
Well the Euros got underway and we now have a few weeks of non-stop football to look forward
to, unless you don’t like football that is. I have enjoyed what I have seen so far, particularly
grounds with spectators in the them, albeit reduced numbers, but what a difference it makes
creating an atmosphere.
Here is my condensed version of what has taken my fancy to date. Raheem Sterlings goal
that got us the victory against Croatia and the roar of the crowd when it went in and great
performances from Phil Foden and Kalvin Phillips all sets us up nicely to do well in this
tournament.
The Welsh national anthem. Always makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up and
makes me wish I was Welsh. They didn’t disappoint either although looking down and out
and drained of energy against Switzerland when Breel Embolo scored in the second half they
rallied and got a deserved equaliser when Keiffer Moore got his head to a delicious cross from
Joe Morrell to plant the ball in the corner of the net. Whether they can progress, who knows?
The Scots. So much expectation after waiting 23 years to play in a top tournament then I have
to say they did disappoint. They were hanging on against the Czech Republic and needed
to go in at half time at 0-0, re-group, then come out for the second half re[rejuvenated. What
they did was concede a sloppy goal by Patrik Schick minutes before the break which was
always going to put them on the back foot. To be fair they came out for the second half and
gave it a go but then disaster happened. Jack Hendry pushed forward a few yards outside the
Czech penalty area, should have sent the ball out wide but decided to shoot. The ball rocketed
backwards and found the path of Schick and in an instant he noticed David Marshall the
Scots keeper way off his line and launched the ball from the half way line into the net with a
desperate Marshall scrambling back. An amazing goal but oh Scotland, what were you doing!
Then there were the Spanish. If these players keep together they will be formidable but despite
all their possession they could have lost to Sweden. Now that would have been a turn up!
