IT IS ONLY A GAME
I think every football fan that watched the Denmark versus Finland match in the Euros on June 13th were
sickened to see the Danish player Christian Erikson collapse on the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The medics seemed to be working overtime on trying to revive him and when they had to use the defibril-
lator you feared the worst for him. However, miraculously and because of the efforts of the medical staff
somehow Erikson pulled through.
The images of his team mates shielding him, in tears, and seeing his wife being consoled by two of his team
mates are images that I for one would rather not see again. He issued a statement via his agent and from
his hospital bed, he said, “Thank you, I won’t give up. I feel better now - but I want to understand what’s
happened. I want to say thank you all for that you did for me.” This more than anything makes you realise
that football is only a game, perhaps, for supporters, the most important of the unimportant things in life.
As we began to take in the distressing news from the Denmark game even more distressing news came
through when it was reported that a couple of youths had broken into Sussex club Buxted FC and smashed a
defibrillator!!! It is difficult to understand the mentality of whoever is responsible for this disgusting crime,
particularly in light of the Christian Erikson event. Buxted FC are a ‘grass roots’ club run by volunteers and
worked hard raising funds to provide their premises with a life-saving defibrillator and then this happens.
Nothing amazes me anymore!
