P. 6
The club continued homeless and shared for a
while with Dartford, but the financial pressure of
the gamble on the land and additional costs of
getting into the Football League led to a financial
crisis and the club withdrew from the league in
1992.
From the ashes of this disaster Maidstone Invicta
was born and started again in the Kent County
League, playing on the training pitch next door to
its old London Road ground. The club continued
to rise through the leagues, groundsharing with
Sittingbourne and Ashford and re-naming to Maidstone United on route before returning to
the Maidstone town centre in James Whatman Way in 2012.
A Dunelm store is now on the site of the old Athletic Ground.
Sittingbourne
This is one of the best examples of how the
fortunes of non-league football clubs can be
compared to a roller coaster ride, many ups and
perhaps too many downs!
For the best part of 100 years Sittingbourne
football club played in the town centre at the Bull
Ground.
But then along came a developer and placed £4.2
million on the table and in 1990 the club took the
cash and invested it into Central Park.
