Applaud The Class Of 92
The Non-League Paper recently reported that David Beckham was the latest Manchester United ‘old
boy’ to become involved with Salford City Football Club, joining Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs,
Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes, although the latter has now left the club to take up the managers role
at nearby Oldham Athletic. The ‘Ammies’ (taken from when they were known as Salford Amateurs)
are currently among the promotion places in the Vanarama National League and hoping to gain another
promotion into the Football League.
Of course there will always be critics that accuse them of using the football club as a ‘play thing’, but
I feel they should be applauded because they are giving something back from a game that they have all
made a nice living from. Salford City was formed in 1940 and is an area of Greater Manchester. Paul
Scholes was born there and the Nevilles and Nicky Butt were also born nearby.
It seems a long way off when in 1980 the players and committee took on the task of restoring their
Moor Lane ground, where the pitch was in poor condition and the stand roofless! This enabled them
to be accepted into the Cheshire League and the rest is, as they say, history.
The moral of this story is, I suppose, and is relevant to all non-league ‘grass roots’ volunteers, is
never forget where you came from, no matter how successful, or not, you may become.
Thank you for reading.
