“There are some very good people on the board and I do not seek to criticise individuals, but
as a body, I do not believe we have shown strong, relevant leadership. Our governance has
descended into chaos and some decisions made by the board seem to change when interpret-
ed by the executive.”
The club made the announcement around mid February that they would not continue and that
they had used up all of their financial reserve. Mr Parmenter said that he had funded the club
for seven weeks after the original government grant money had run out in December. He said
that he had run the club for the past fifteen years without debt and was not going to change
that now. The first team squad was put on furlough.
The National League, in their wisdom through an independent panel, fined The Whites £40,000
with a 12 point deduction for the 2021-22 season. There were also 16 member clubs from Step
2 (National League North & South), that received fines from £1400 to £8000 for failing to fulfil
league obligations. This action hardly supports member clubs through what has been a very
difficult world wide pandemic. Step 2 subsequently voted to declare the season null & void and
have ceased playing for the season.
Mr Parmenter said that the Whites will not pay the fine and are seeking legal advice. He said
that the club took the decision to cease playing to prevent them becoming insolvent, if they
enact the fine it will push them into insolvency.
I know many true football supporters will have a lot of sympathy for Jim Parmenter because
he does make a very good point. How many clubs have we seen go bankrupt because of
mismanagement and over stretching themselves financially. The demise of Bury last season is
a prime example of this and although this situation has been brought about by a world wide
pandemic which the authorities are having to make firm decisions to overcome, our football
administrators have to make similar firm decisions.
Brian Barwick the National League Chairman announced that he is to step down at the end
of the season, although he said that this was not because of the difficulties that Covid has
presented them with and that he had informed the committee of his decision back in February.
