feast. At the time of writing, news has just been announced fans can return to grounds, in limited
numbers and depending on what Tier you are in. We are still waiting on full clarification for ‘non-
elite’ games and all the variables around crossover of Tiers and so on. BUT it felt like a promising
announcement from the Prime Minister as we hopefully inch closer to a much brighter future.
For Step 1 and 2 clubs, this period has been draining. Yes, games have been going ahead and
there has been government support through the National
Lottery, but the absence of fans has been felt acutely.
Likewise, it has been tough for Steps 3 and below.
Fans have been back in grounds but there has been
the additional responsibility on clubs to make sure their
grounds are Covid secure, while adhering to all manner
of guidelines and protocols. Again, it’s been hard to keep
up with.
When Lockdown 2.0 was introduced, that saw the season
halted in its tracks and more uncertainty. It’s been a tough few weeks once again. BUT, hopefully
you are reading this piece in a programme, at a game, in the fresh air, with fans socially distanced
alongside you and looking forward to watching some live football. Or you’re reading this having
been at a game, in the fresh air, with fans socially distanced alongside you and you enjoyed
watching a live football game, in the fresh air, with fans socially distanced alongside you and you
enjoyed watching some live football.
If 2020 has taught us anything, it is to not take Non-League football for granted. Global pandemic
wasn’t in the thoughts of many, if any, people this time last year, who’d have predicted within a
couple of months of Christmas that a whole campaign would get blown out of the water by a virus.
Since the season kicked-off again at the beginning of September, I’ve enjoyed every minute of
being in a ground with fans, albeit in limited capacities. It’s been so tough for those fans of Steps
1 and 2 clubs who still haven’t had a chance to watch their team properly since back in March.
