Welcome - Here’s To The Volunteers
Another month has passed which has seen the football season get underway, the friend-
lies are behind us and the pre-season training is over for another year. The ‘grass roots’
volunteers will be out in force, busily administering, organising, cutting the grass, paint-
ing changing rooms or doing the jobs that have to be done to keep non-league football
going. It is very easy to be consumed in the enormity of the task but at the end of the
day it has to be remembered that it is only a game! But is it? I think it was Bill Shankly
the legend Liverpool manager that said, “Some people think that football is a matter of
life and death, I can assure them it is much more serious than that”. I get what he means,
particularly at ‘grass roots’ level, it is about providing an organised sport for people in
our communities. If it keeps young and older people active and provides for them a bit
of light relief away from the pressures of every day life, that can only be a good thing.
The same thing can be said for any organised sport or activity for without it we would
all become vegetables. So, I raise a glass to all the volunteers up and down the country,
good on yer!
Thank you for reading.
