What Sort Of Society Do We Live In?

Well the Euros are now over and once again England suffered the massive disappointment of losing in the
final to Italy in a penalty shoot out. But make no mistake, this was a huge achievement for Gareth Southgate
and his young squad of players. They showed that they were as good as Italy, who are a very good well
organised side. They matched them for one hundred and twenty minutes and it was the Italians that were
holding on towards the end of the second period of extra time, thankful that they were still in with a chance
with the lottery of a penalty shoot-out.

The young men that stepped up to take those spot kicks with the pressure and the hopes of the nation on
their shoulders must have been unbearable. Alan Shearer, the former legendary England striker described
the twenty to thirty yard walk to the penalty spot as the ‘longest walk’ you are ever likely to take and
that you have to try to focus and blot everything out. Not easy! He said that he would look at the opposite
corner of the goal that he intended to shoot into with the hope that the keeper would dive in that direction.
Then after the dust had settled and the result was known the racial abuse on social media started. Jadon
Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka were all targeted. The Metropolitan Police are investigating. I
hope these reptiles are named and shamed. They are a disgrace to this nation and should be ashamed to
call themselves football supporters, which after all is a sport that every nationality, culture or creed can
take part in, regardless of a persons religion or the colour of their skin.
