Volunteers Rule Okay
Having been involved with clubs, virtually all of my life, it never ceases to amaze me how attached and
protective people can be when they join up. Some will often take over a particular job or skill that they
have volunteered for and make it ‘their own’ and god help anyone that should encroach into ‘their’ space!
The ‘tea lady’ at Salford City Football Club springs to mind. She had been working in the tea hut for twenty
years producing match day cuppas and when Gary Neville & Co took over the running of the club and
wanted to improve the facilities their proposal to re-locate the tea hut went down like a ‘lead balloon’! It
took a big hug and assurances from Gary to prevent her from leaving, such was her passion for what she
did for the club, regardless of the fact that the new owners also had the passion and vision to get Salford
into the Football League, but they also could see the massive benefits of having good people around them
in their attempt to do so.
Problems arise however when that volunteer is part of the playing management team. Normally a team
manager will live or die by results and be appointed or replaced accordingly, but when that person is a
volunteer then that presents a very difficult decision for committees to have to make. Do they go for
promotion or mid table obscurity or worse?
