20 Years Of The Round Up &
Dennis’s Brainbasher
Twenty years is a long time particularly when you produce something on a voluntary basis, but
that is exactly what Bob Chivington, the Round Up editor, has been doing over the past two
decades. Together with the Brainbasher Quiz he has been putting the booklet together month
in and month out to raise funds for local ‘grass roots’ football since October 2000.
The Brainbasher was the original idea of Dennis Stewart (pictured just below) a good friend of
Bob’s and they used both projects to raise funds for Deal Town Football Club when both were
involved with the club from 2000 to 2010. When Dennis passed away a few years ago Bob
wanted to continue producing the Brainbash-
er in his memory and re named it ‘Dennis’s
Brainbasher’.
Bob said,”The Round Up is something I love
doing and I am proud of. When I think of
the very first edition, which was very basic (I
have a copy of every one I have produced),
I can’t believe how good it looks now. The
revenue it brings in though has helped ‘grass
roots’ football which is a great passion of
mine as well. During my time at Deal Town
FC the revenue from the booklet, the spon-
sorship I brought in and my general fund-
raising efforts, particularly towards the new
clubhouse, amounts to a six figure sum”.
To mark the twentieth anniversary Bob de-
vised a Bonus Quiz Question which started
in November 2018 and if quizzers get every
question right they can win £100 first prize, £50 second prize with two prizes of £25 for third
and fourth places.
“It has been quite exciting gathering in the
completed quizzes to see who was still in the
competition. There are still two quizzers that
live in Milton Keynes that Dennis used to re-
fer to as his ‘foreigners’, that continue to do
the quiz by post, which I think is a great trib-
ute to him. He was a really decent gentleman
and a very good friend of mine”.
Bob, who is co-founder of Cinque Ports Foot-
ball Club, intends to carry on producing the
Round Up and Dennis’s Brainbasher for as
long as he can. Bob continues, “I will con-
tinue to do my bit for ‘grass roots’ football
because these days everything costs money,
from match balls to heat spray, but my time
doesn’t cost anything and it is so nice to be
appreciated by my club. That is priceless!”.
