Here’s To Supporters Clubs
Looking through my copy of the Non League Paper recently I was amazed at how many football clubs have
Supporters Clubs, some are even run by them. The membership of these clubs obviously depends on the
size of the football club and the level that they play at because the level of support can either pick up or
drop off depending on promotion or relegation.
Supporters Clubs are an excellent way for the volunteers that give up their valuable time supporting their
local club to get involved and have valuable input in the general running and well-being of ‘their’ club.
There are also a number of clubs that have been formed by the supporters. FC United of Manchester,
for instance, was formed by many disgruntled Man U fans disillusioned at not being able to get tickets,
paying exorbitant prices for merchandise and the feeling that the true ‘supporters’ opinion doesn’t count
anymore.
There are some ‘phoenix’ clubs, such as the recently defunct Football League Club Bury, (founded in
1885), that have been revived by their supporters and they have been accepted into the North West
Counties League Division 1 as AFC Bury and have applied to enter the FA Vase for Step 5 & 6 clubs next
season.
The one bit of advice I can offer any prospective supporter wishing to get involved with his Supporters
Club is never question the way the club is run or administered, no matter how dismal results may be or
how disillusioned you may feel about it, because you may find that the friends you thought you had in that
club will not support you because it is easier to settle for the ‘status quo’.
Thank you for reading.
