Credit Where Credits Due
I had the privilege recently to attend a football match at Marke Wood recreation ground that had had no
organised football or any other sport played there for nearly four years. The ground had been left to the
people of the community around 1928 as a recreation ground, (public land for the purpose of games). The
ground boasts an excellent pavilion which had been crying out to be used. Dover District Council, eager to
see the facilities properly utilised encouraged the two founder members of Cinque Ports Football Club,
myself and Steve Bowers to bring their club there and offered them a lease on the pavilion. The two
volunteers took up the offer and started to upgrade and improve the building, at their expense and at no
cost to the rate payer.
The thing that really stood out for me was the number of people watching and enjoying the game in the
sun, while other people walked their dogs or played with their children in the play park, or in another part
of the field even enjoyed a picnic.
Steve and I are rightly proud of what we are achieving in bringing football back to the ground and trans-
forming the old pavilion by giving it a bit of TLC. After the game the referee praised our players, saying
they were a credit to their club which indicates that they have bought into what is being created for them.
The neighbours should also be appreciative because with so much land being swallowed up for housing the
next logical step for the ground, if it continued to be redundant, does not bare thinking about!
