We Cant Let The Nimby’s Win
I had a conversation recently with a woman that told me that she was familiar with how ‘grass roots’ non-
league football operates. The conversation continued and I was staggered to hear her opinion that football
players and supporters were generally drunken hooligans and the game was driven by violence fuelled by
the consumption of alcohol. I tried to explain that the days of football hooliganism of the late sixties and
seventies were long gone and that the game is more family orientated now, with the top flight of English
football being all ticket and seated affairs and the lower levels of non Football League welcoming families
and communities to support their local football club.
It occurred to me that if this sort of opinion still exists no wonder voluntarily run sports clubs have trouble
progressing their clubs because there will always be people that will complain for the sake of complaining
and no matter how you counter their argument you will never move them from their entrenched position
because that is what they want to believe. Of course they will be the first to moan about ‘binge drinking’
and wanton damage caused by young people ‘hanging around’ on street corners because they have nothing
to do and criticise the obesity problem society is suffering from, but heaven help anyone that wants to
provide young people with sporting activities if it’s anywhere near them!
The Nimby’s can’t have it both ways, but that just emphasises the level of hypocrisy that exists in our
‘liberal’ society today.
Thank you for reading.
