Remember The Past But Welcome The Future

It was really sad news recently that the Leyton Orient manager Justin Edinburgh had passed away at the age of 49.
Justin had a distinguished career starting at Southend United before his dream move to Tottenham Hotspur making
215 appearances over ten years. He then moved on to Portsmouth spending three years there before the Essex boy
returned to the county as player manager of Billericay Town between 2003 and 2006. He had just taken the ‘Os’
back to the Football League and was due to collect the National League Manager of the Year award. He died of a heart
attack at a local gym that he and his wife regularly used.
As sad as this news is life has to go on and Leyton Orient will appoint another manager and hopefully continue life in
the Football League that Justin worked so hard to achieve. Every club from the Premiership down suffer bereavements
which are always hard to take particularly when that person has given so much to that club.
However at ‘grass roots’ level it can sometimes have devastating consequences, particularly when volunteers joining
clubs to keep them going is on the decline. The difficulty is getting the message across to younger people that clubs
do not run themselves and that the person that makes the half time cuppa is just as important as the guy that scores
the goals. We have to promote the ‘club mentality’ and a sense of belonging, not just in football but in sports clubs
in general, because if we don’t clubs will fold and we are already seeing this happen. To quote the saying, “you don’t
know what you’ve got till it’s gone”.
We must remember all those that have dedicated themselves to their chosen sport but we must also encourage more
      people to get involved.
      Thank you for reading.
