We All Have To Play By The Rules!
In the world we live in, a well organised society has to accept laws, rules and regulations which we all
have to abide by. Even voluntary run football clubs have their own set of rules which their members
usually take notice of. The problem is, at ‘grass roots’ level they are mainly run on a voluntary basis,
which means that the rules are sometimes not adhered to fairly. You would expect that if someone
steps out of line they would be called before a ‘committee’ to answer whatever the ‘charge’ is sup-
posed to be.
In my nearly twenty years of involvement in ‘grass roots’ football I have known this not always to
be the case. I knew of a case where a volunteer that gave a massive amount of their time, love and
commitment to a club, receiving accolades and awards from their ‘friends and associates’ along the
way, was then barred from that club without being called to a disciplinary hearing or an appeal against
the imposed ban, with no review or consideration to lift the ban after nearly ten years!
There will always be clashes of personality within any organisation and there will always be differ-
ences of opinion, after all the game of football, the playing side and its governance, has always been
about opinions, which is what makes the game the entertaining sport it is....and long may it continue.
Even prison sentences are reviewed as part of the rules though!!!
